Prof. Ado Jorio

Prof. Ado Jorio is a Brazilian physicist. He is a full professor in the Department of Physics of the Federal University of Minas Gerais. He is author of the books “Group Theory: Application to the Physics of Condensed Matter” (Springer, 2008) and “Raman Spectroscopy in Graphene Related Systems” (WileyVCH 2011), and hasedited several books on nanomaterials synthesis, characterizations and applications. He received the Somiya Award from the International Union of Materials Research Societies, Scopus Brazil from Elsevier & CAPES, ICTP Prize from the International Center for Theoretical Physics, Georg Forster Research Award from the Humboldt Foundation and the Good Example Award of Rede Globo de Televisão, in the Science category. He is a member of the Brazilian Society of Physics, of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, and received the “membership award to the American Chemical Society”.He worked as a postdoctoral researcher with the Institute Professor Mildred S. Dresselhaus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, where he made the first measurements of the Raman spectrum of a single molecule of carbon nanotube. Presently he is working on research and development of scientific instrumentation in optics for the study of nanostructures with applications in new materials and biomedicine. Prof. Jorio is Director of Technology and Information in INMETRO, and Visiting Professor at ETH Zurich. Coordinator of the Brazilian Network for Research and Instrumentation in Optical Nanospectroscopy and considered one of "The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds", according to the Thomson Reuters.
